Haiti Relief Update

by Shawn Thornton on February 21, 2010

WHAT’S ALREADY BEEN DONE

  1. Great offerings at Calvary, totaling more than $70,000
  2. We collected and sent more than $100,000 in antibiotics, medicines, and medical supplies.
  3. Rob Marcarelli took a large part of the medications and water purification devices one week after the earthquake.
  4. The larger Calvary team of 15 was on the ground in Port au Prince as soon as we could get them in, 12 days after the quake.  A partnership was formed through the trip with Christian Associates and TDA.
  5. More than 100 Calvary volunteers stepped up to collect supplies, raise funds, do research, organize Saturday’s Rummage Sale, and to go on future trips.

WHAT’S HAPPENING RIGHT NOW

  1. Saturday’s rummage sale, organized by Morgan (11 years old), earned more than $7,000 for our Haiti relief efforts!
  2. We are planning the next mission teams and assessing the right skills and people that are needed for each.  There is a meeting for anyone interested in going or in helping to send teams tomorrow night at 6 (Monday – Feb 22nd), here at Calvary.
  3. HELP Haiti packs – Lodging is a huge problem in Haiti right now and the rains have started!!  Tents are the biggest need — water proof, brand new tents.  Please stop by the Mission Counter to see the tent full of supplies and pick up a list of items that you can donate over the next 2 weeks. Click this link for a flyer about the packs: Haiti Tent Flyer 2.20.10 FINAL
  4. Haitian pastor Julio Volcy, one of our major partners, will be here for Mission Night on Thursday night, March 4.  Everyone is welcome to come and meet him and hear more about our next steps.
  5. In 2 weeks, we will be sending a 40-foot container of food, HELP Haiti packs, and tents in partnership with Help the Children.  A few Calvary members are on their board.

WHAT ARE OUR FUTURE STEPS IN HAITI

  1. In addition to working on the issues of food and lodging in Haiti, we will be constructing a very large water reservoir to serve an area of more than 15,000 people whose water is now contaminated.
  2. We are committed to working alongside Haitian pastors and business leaders, to help them employ and engage the local people in the rebuilding process.
  3. We are committed to send multiple teams over the next 18 months at least.
  4. We are committed to helping our partner ministries in Haiti rebuild and reach out to their neighborhoods with the Gospel of Christ.  One of those partners is Bill Manassero at Maison de Lumiere orphanage.
  5. All of the donations received are changing lives already in Haiti. We have Godly and accountable leaders working on the ground now and our future rebuilding plans are coming together very well.  God is Good.
